Libertarian think tank The Cato Institute has broken down personal freedom into domains weighted by the Institute’s valuation of impact on freedom. The Institute defines paternalism as the opposite of freedom. See below for the specific parameters and their weights, with incarceration rates weighted highest and gun rights ranked third most important. Even with their love of the Second Amendment and catchy slogans, Texas (“Don’t Mess with Texas”) ranked dead last with Idaho (“Esto Perpetua”, “Famous Potatoes” “Don’t Tread on Me”) trying desperately to overtake the number 50 spot. You’re not free, Texans. You’re not free, Idahoans.
